Surf conditions
The general surf conditions in southwest Nicaragua are incredible.

• We are well exposed to the south swell from the roaring forties starting in March/April and lasting onto October.
• We have 330 + days with off shore winds.
•We have warm water all year
• And finally we still have few and friendly people in the line up
• In the “off season” we get west and north west swells which gives fun chest to head high waves.
Usually people stay in San Juan Del Sur, and have to drive or boat to surf.
Another option is to stay at one of the traditional Nicaragua surf camps, which also means you have to drive or boat to surf.
So the general take is, that the surf spots and surf breaks in Nicaragua are all hard to get to, and you have to rough it to some degree to get piece of the true epic surf. At least you have to put in lots of efforts in driving on bad roads, or being ready to spend all day on a panga, (small open motor boat) together with the rest of surf camp crew, chasing the waves.

Well, that is all history now

How to surf Nicaragua with Iguana Surf Retreats

Iguana Surf Retreats invites you to one week of SURF and RELAXATION in a LUXURY setting. We offer an ALL INCLUSIVE week package, which allows you to live in style while enjoying epic surf conditions.

We stay in a private gated resort and live in 4 star luxury condos. Breakfast smoothies, at the pool side, after surf massage, and an afternoon golf if you feel like it, is all part of the experience.

We have direct access to three surf spots:
• Colorado: a barreling river mouth. It is fast, hollow and commonly referred to as the most consistent beach break in Nicaragua. Colorado breaks over sand bars made from the river mouth, and works at all tides, all day, all year. Both left and right barrels, with the left being the most epic on a south swell.

• Panga Drops: named after the only way to get there – being dropped off by a panga boat – is now accessible by walking 5 minutes from the resort. Panga Drop is a reef, and a great wave for long boarders. It has a mellow take off, a faster inside section. When it is big, Panga Drop is huge, and double/triple overhead faces can be ridden. Panga Drops is the wave in Nicaragua that catches the west and north west swells best. So waves guaranteed all year. Both left and rights, with the rights being longer.

• The point: a rarely surf right point break, that with the right conditions can offer epic surf. Requires a big south swell.
When you stay in Iguana, chances are you will never hit the dirt road in search for other waves.

However, you may of course choose to do so in the degree you want to. If you are a experienced surfer, and there is a big swell, you may want to check out the outer reef in Popoyo, by some called the pipeline of Nicaragua. Also Manzanillo left point is an option to visit.
